Guangzhou Sets up New Districts

Two suburban counties in Guangzhou officially became districts of the city, fortifying the capital of Guangdong Province as a centre city in the prosperous Pearl River Delta which borders Hong Kong and Macao.

Guangzhou Mayor Lin Shusen Friday said changing the counties to districts will help eliminate executive and bureaucratic obstacles in the city's economic construction and attract more foreign investment in the following years.

Guangzhou's economic development will also play an even more important role in the whole province's modernization drive, according to the mayor.

Approved by the State Council on May 21, the establishment of Panyu and Huadu districts in Guangzhou will also help improve efficiency and management to build a modern international metropolis, Lin said.

Huang Huahua, Party secretary of Guangzhou, and Lin yesterday separately visited the newly established Panyu and Huadu districts and encouraged local governments to take even bolder steps in their economic construction in the future.

Guangzhou now has a total of 10 districts with a population of about 6.8 million.

Another two suburban cities of Zengcheng and Conghua are also expected to become Guangzhou's districts later this year.
