Net Survey Ranks Best Universities

Beijing University is among the best schools in the country, according to a study released on Thursday.

The Internet company Netbig, which conducted the survey of Chinese national universities, listed Qinghua, Beijing, and Nanjing universities as the nation's "big three."

Qinghua University was named best technology university, while Beijing University was named the best comprehensive university, according to the report.

The annual survey is the second from the Shenzhen-based company, an unofficial Internet agency that provides web-based educational services to Chinese youth.

To calculate the ranking, the company followed the methods of US News and World Report, which is considered an authority in ranking universities in the United States.

The collected surveys were reviewed by educational experts, most of them scholars and professors in their field.

"Some schools may complain about our methods, but we have been doing our best to make the report objective and fair," said Jiang Jining, the chief executive official with Netbig.

According to the official, overall ranking was determined by standardizing the scores achieved by every school in several variables.

The overall ranking system relies on quantitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality.

Each university is categorized by their curriculum, along with a dozen indicators of academic excellence.

Finally, the universities are ranked against their peers, based on their composite scores.

The indicators used by Netbig fall into various categories, including academic reputation, retention of students, faculty resources and financial resources.

The indicators include input measures that reflect the quality of students, faculty, and other resources, and outcome measures that signal how well the institution does its job.
