40 Cities Nominated by UN for Human Settlement Award

Forty cities worldwide, including three in China, were nominated for the 2000 Dubai International Award of Best Practices by the United Nations Center for Human Settlement.

The three Chinese capital cities are Shenyang in Liaoning province, Chengdu in Sichuan province, and Kunming in Yunnan province.

An official from the center disclosed that the center selected the 40 cities from 700 applications from 110 countries.

Information about the cities will be stored in the center's database for reference, the official added.

All the three Chinese cities were chosen for their remarkable achievements in improving the environment, he said, adding that Shenyang was named for setting a good example for other industrial cities in realizing sustained development in urban construction.

Kunming and Chengdu were nominated respectively for their success in easing urban traffic and treating waste water, the U.N. official noted.

He said that ten cities will be finally chosen from the 40 cities for the best human settlement award, and the finalists will be announced at a ceremony in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, in October. Winners will be awarded 30,000 US dollars each.

The award for human settlement, presented every two years, was established by the center in 1996.
