The Year 2000 International Conference on Head and Neck Tumors opened in Shanghai on June 9. More than 300 medical experts from 22 countries and regions are participating in the four-day conference, and will deliver over 300 papers.
Qiu Weiliu, director of a national surgical commission on head and neck tumors, said that China has benefited immeasurably from its world-class achievements in the treatment of ear, nose, throat, mouth and neck tumors. Chinese surgeons have removed these types of tumors from people ranging in age from a few months to 90 years.
Shanghai No. Nine Hospital, where Qiu works, carried out 1,322 operations for removing facial cell tumors and performed vein grafts for 2,000 patients between 1986-96, and reported a 97 percent success rate.
