Liaoning Reports Initial Success in Water Pollution Reduction

Pollution has been controlled in the water system of the Liaohe River in northeast China's Liaoning Province, with 70 percent of the polluting enterprises in the area meeting pollution control standards and 11 water treatment plants either completed or under construction.

As one of the three rivers earmarked by the central government in its pollution-control campaign, Liaohe River has received special attention since last March when the State Council approved a draft governing pollution control in the river.

Liaoning started to build sewage treatment plants along the Liaohe River late last year. Three such plants have been completed, with another eight under construction. The province plans to build 19 such plants along the river, which upon completion will treat 2.

8 million tons of sewage daily, accounting for 75.5 percent of daily sewage discharge.
