Moldova President Hopes for Further Development of Moldova-China Relations

Visiting Moldova President Petru Lucinschi said he is very satisfied with the results of his current visit to China, and believed that Moldova-China relations will further develop in various fields.

In an interview with Chinese reporters Friday, Lucinschi said that the relations between China and Moldova could be a good example of how two countries, regardless of their size, can work together on an equal footing.

Both countries respect each other's national conditions and do not interfere into each other's internal affairs. At the same time, they cooperate in maintaining world peace and participating in economic globalization, he added, stressing that Moldova hopes to further consolidate and develop such ties.

During the past two days, Lucinschi held talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin and met with other Chinese leaders during which they discussed bilateral relations and issues of common concern.

Both Moldova and China are faced with the task of maintaining sovereignty and territorial integrity, Lucinschi said.

Moldova will wholeheartedly support the "One China" policy as well as the reunification cause of China, he emphasized.

When touching upon bilateral trade and economic cooperation, Lucinschi said that bilateral trade and economic ties have not yet developed on par with their political ties.

Lucinschi hoped that both countries will continue to make efforts to locate cooperation programs of mutual concern and mutual benefit, and make major progress in bilateral trade and economic ties.

He encouraged China to invest in Moldova, insisting that it would help China to broaden economic ties with the European continent, as Moldova borders Asia and Europe.

Lucinschi has been much impressed by his visit, compared with his last visit four years ago in the capacity as president of the Moldova parliament.

The enormous changes in urban construction and the improvement in people's living standards are a clear sign that China has maintained social stability and realized economic development, he said.
