Bangladesh, China Sign Power AgreementA Chinese company signed an agreement with Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) Thursday for implementing a power rehabilitation project to upgrade electricity transmission network across the country. The deal between the PDB and China National Electric Ware and Cable Import Export Corporation was signed by PDB Secretary M. Sirajuddoula and Song Yueming, president of the Chinese company. Under the project, valued at 5.53 billion taka (US$106 million), 29 grid substations and 819 kilometers of 132-kilovote transmission lines will be rehabilitated to increase their capability, said an official release. The project will be completed in 36 months, aiming to solve a nagging power problem in the country. The Chinese government has already agreed to provide 74 million dollars under supplier's credit through the Chinese company under an agreement signed on May 24 between the two governments. On completion of the rehabilitation project, the capacity of the 29 grid substations will rise to 2,000 megawatts from the present 1,100 megawatts. "Subscribers of these areas will get uninterrupted power supply from the newly-installed government and private power plants on completion of the scheme," said the official release.
