Microsoft Sets up Joint Lab with Chinese University

Microsoft Research China announced that the joint lab on computer-based language translation set up by Microsoft and Harbin Industrial University opened on June 8.

Researchers at the joint lab will be involved in projects to develop a comprehensive bilingual dictionary and translation module, and educational software.

Microsoft will fund all the research, and the results will be used jointly by the two sides.

Computer-based translation has bright prospects, as the number of Chinese Internet users is increasing by 300 percent yearly, but nearly 99 percent of website information is in English.

Microsoft Research China has long been interested in cooperating with Chinese universities and has set up two other joint labs.
