Chinese Ambassador Holds Reception to Mark 50-Year Ties With Myanmar

Chinese Ambassador Liang Dong held a grand reception Thursday in warm celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Myanmar.

Attending the reception were Second Secretary of the Myanmar State Peace and Development Council Lieutenant-General Tin Oo and other government officials as well as some 200 representatives from different circles.

Ambassador Liang said at the reception that 50 years ago on this day, China and Myanmar formally established diplomatic relations and since then the long-standing friendly exchanges between the Chinese and Myanmar peoples have opened a new page.

In the mid-1950s, the leaders of the two countries jointly advocated the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, smoothly settling the issue of demarcation of boundary left behind by history in the spirit of mutual respect, understanding and friendly consultation, he recalled.

With great vision and foresight, leaders of elder generations of the two countries laid down solid foundation for Sino-Myanmar friendship, he said, adding that from then on, the friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two nations in various fields have been steadily developed.

He believed that such relations of friendship and mutually- beneficial cooperation will not only serve the fundamental interest of the two peoples, but also be conducive to the prosperity and stability of the whole region.

The ambassador pointed out that after the Cold War, the international situation has witnessed drastic changes, saying that the Sino-Myanmar traditional friendship has stood the test in the complicated international environment and showed stronger and stronger vitality.

He stressed that since the very day China and Myanmar established diplomatic relations, Myanmar has acknowledged that there is but one China in the world, that is the People's Republic of China, with Taiwan being part of the Chinese territory, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all Chinese.

The Chinese government highly appreciates Myanmar's stance that the successive Myanmar governments have always adhered to the "One China" policy and never involved in official ties of any form with Taiwan.

Tin Oo said at the reception that due to the mutual respect and good-neighborliness that Myanmar and China entertain towards each other, the two countries, with long historical ties, continue to enjoy friendly relations till date.

He noted that the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which Myanmar and China jointly advocated, not only serve as guiding principles in Myanmar's foreign policy but also continue to exist as firm foundations in the conduct of present day international relations.

Tin pointed out that all necessary assistance provided by China at the time when Myanmar is striving for its economic development is highly beneficial.

He pledged that on Myanmar's part, it will continue to pursue the "One China" policy which it has been practicing steadfastly.

He expressed his country's firm conviction that Myanmar and China will successfully overcome the myriad challenges of the 21st century through their joint efforts.
