China Boosts Development of Rural Towns

China plans to develop 4,000 rural towns, each with a population of over 20,000, during the Tenth Five-Year-Plan period (2001-2005) to boost the country's rural economic development.

The move is expected to provide jobs for 50 million rural laborers, and boost population in the rural towns to around 250 million, according to "China Construction News".

Some 200 of the towns will have a population of more than 50, 000 each.
