Prestigious University Celebrates 80th Anniversary

Harbin Polytechnic University (HPU), known as a cradle for Chinese engineers, Wednesday celebrated its 80th anniversary.

Vice-Premier Li Lanqing sent a letter of congratulation to the university saying that it has a long history of supplying talented workers for the country, and many of them have become prominent in the national defense and aerospace technology industries.

HPU, founded in 1920, became a national key university in 1954 and has trained more than 80,000 graduates with high level professional abilities. In the past two decades, it focused on scientific research on national defense and aerospace technology.

With state approval for its quality of administration, teaching, and research programs, HPU has become one of the key universities to receive governmental funding in the 21st century.

It now has 35,000 students and 2,700 teachers. Among its teachers are 275 professors who teach students working for doctorates, and 12 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.

More than 30,000 people attended Wednesday's anniversary celebration.
