China Strives to Provide Better Social Security

The Chinese government has taken a series of measures in recent years to ensure that the basic rights and benefits of laborers be guaranteed, a Chinese official said in Geneva Wednesday.

Speaking at the on-going International Labor Conference, China' s Labor Minister Zhang Zuoji told a plenum that China has now established a three-layer social security program with Chinese characteristics, which will ensure basic livelihood and unemployment insurance for laid off workers and minimum living standards for urban residents.

At the same time, Zhang said, China has implemented a re- employment project to help laid off workers get new jobs.

China is also speeding up reforms of the social security systems in pension, unemployment and medical services and has established certain systems that suit the national conditions of China, Zhang added.

The minister said that the Chinese government is willing to strengthen its cooperation with the International Labor Organization and all of its members, to share and use for reference their experience in improving the construction of labor markets and the establishment of social security systems, in order to jointly promote the development of the world labor insurance.
