Earthquake Injures 24 in Gansu

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale injured 24 people, four seriously, in Northwest China's Gansu province, a local official said on Wednesday.

More than 4,000 families were made homeless by the quake, which struck at 6.59 p.m. (1059 GMT) on Tuesday, the official said. The epicentre was about 200 km (125 miles) north of the provincial capital, Lanzhou.

"We felt the building swing and heard a big noise," said the official, from the earthquake office in Jingtai, the worst-hit district.

The official said economic losses were estimated at 82 million yuan ($1 million), but did not specify what they were.

On Wednesday, an earthquake shook wide areas of central Japan, injuring three people. On Sunday, a powerful quake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale killed at least 120 people and injured nearly 1,300 on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
