APEC Trade Ministers Support China's Early Entrance into WTO

A presidential statement released by the two-day APEC trade ministers meeting, which ended Wednesday in Darwin city of Australia, backed China's early entrance into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The statement urged the concerned WTO members to conclude their bilateral negotiations with China as soon as possible.

Speaking at the meeting, Chinese Foreign Economic and Trade Minister Shi Guangsheng noted that China has made its unremitting efforts to join WTO.

As a responsible big developing country, China would comply with WTO'S rules and fulfill its obligations after entering into the organization, the minister said.

On the brewing new round of talks of WTO, Shi Guangsheng stressed that at present, the key is to make a balanced agenda, which must fairly treat the problems concerned by the developed members and the developing members, in order to reach an interest balance at the end between the two categories of members in the organization.

On the issue of how the APEC members should act to promote WTO' s talks, the meeting failed in making any concrete agreement.
