Northern Xinjiang Hit By Locusts

More than 2 million hectares of land in northern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China, have been plagued by locusts, according to Xinjiang's locust control headquarters.

This is the third largest locust plague in the region since 1990. Eight prefectures and counties in northern Tianshan Mountain are being plagued by locusts.

There are over 10,000 locusts per square meter in some of the worst hit areas.

The disaster is mainly attributed to the impact left over by the locust plague in Xinjiang and in neighboring Kazakhstan and Russia last year.

However, experts said that the possibility for the plague to spread to neighboring provinces is very low. Xinjiang has made all preparations to fight against the plague.
