Shanghai Declaration Adopted

The Asia-Pacific Regional Forum on Urban Information approved the Shanghai Declaration Tuesday, stressing promotion of mutual understanding and cooperation and a narrowed gap in spread of information among countries in the region.

The declaration says that economic globalization and information exchange is the general trend of the social development. Information trade is becoming the power behind all fields including trade, investment, technical transfer.

The high-level forum cooperation committee for urban information in Asian and Pacific regions will be set up based on the principles of independence, equal opportunity and mutual benefit.

An urban information appraisal system will also be built to regularly compare the superiority and defects of cities in the region.

The declaration states that the forum will be held annually.

Some 650 delegates attended the forum, including officials from United Nations organizations, mayors of more than 40 cities from the Asia-Pacific region, as well as a group of Chinese and overseas specialists.
