Closer Polish-Chinese Parliamentary Ties Expected

Speaker of Poland's House of Representatives Maciej Plazynski Tuesday called for closer ties between the parliaments of Poland and China to promote bilateral cooperation in various fields.

"The Polish parliament is willing to step up exchanges and cooperation with China's National People's Congress (NPC) and to strengthen cooperation in political, economic, scientific and technological, and cultural fields," Plazynski told Buhe, deputy chairman of the NPC's Standing Committee, at a meeting in Warsaw.

Despite the fact that Poland and China have quite different national conditions, he said, bilateral relations and cooperation between the two parliaments should not be affected.

Poland hopes to draw on the successful experience of China's economic reforms, Plazynski said. "Poland cannot neglect China, a huge potential consumer market," he added.

With the expansion of bilateral ties, the two countries have witnessed better contacts between Poland's National Assembly and the NPC, China's legislature, Buhe said. He hoped that Chinese- Polish parliamentary ties will be further enhanced.

Buhe, who arrived Monday on a five-day goodwill visit, also held separate talks with Stanislaw Zajac, deputy speaker of Poland's House of Representatives, and Polish Foreign Minister Bronislaw Geremek.

Geremek told Buhe that parliamentary exchanges are a vital part of bilateral political dialogue, and Buhe's current trip marks a good start of a Chinese leader's visit to Poland.

Buhe is scheduled to leave Poland Friday for the Czech Republic to continue his four-nation European tour, which will also take him to Hungary and Romania.
