China Develops New Rehabilitation Way for Drug AddictsChinese mandatory drug-relief centers have explored new ways of weaning drug addicts off the habit by encouraging them to join deep sea fishing operations or farming rather than staying in rehabilitation centers.Zhuang Huiyun was among the 24 drug addicts in Qionghai City, Hainan, who have been sent to join in the fishing operations in the South China Sea. After seven months away from any possible access to drugs, Zhuang has found a relief from drug-reliance and his life returned to normal. A total of 15,000 people have been affected by narcotics in this southernmost island province, which account for 2.5 per thousand of its total population. About 70 percent of the criminal cases are related with drug smuggling and selling. Rehabilitation centers are working hard in the anti-drug campaign. In addition to providing education and rehabilitation, the centers compile their personal documents of the reformed drug users in computer and ask them to do urine test every half a year. This method also helps reduce the cost needed in the anti-drug effort. The Qionghai city government last year designated a 0.8-ha farmland to the local drug-relief center for the purpose. This method has been used in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province and the neighboring Yunnan Province where many so-called "Drug-Proof Zones" have been set up to help the rehabilitation efforts of drug users. |
