Construction of Sewer Network Underway in Shanghai

Construction work of new sewer collecting systems began in Shanghai Monday.

With a price tag of 700 million yuan (84 million US dollars) the project will channel sewage discharged from the bustling financial center of the Pudong New District in the city, which is now famous for its dazzling skyscrapers.

The 30-km underground artery pipe can collect 360,000 tons of waste water daily.

And another 6.6-km pipeline will collect 80,000 tons of waste water from the western part of the city.

The project is a part of the second-phase sewage disposal program in Shanghai, which will have a total investment of 6.3 billion yuan (759 million US dollars).

The pipeline in the Pudong section will connect with a 130-km long pipe, which was laid at the end of last year, running from two industrial parks in the southwest and southern parts of the city to a sewer treatment plant in Pudong.

All the sewage is piped to a disposal plant built at the mouth of Yangtze River, which has a daily handling capacity of 1.7 million tons.
