HK Monthly Air Passenger Transport Exceeds 1 Million

The Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Airways carried 1,030,456 passengers in April, the first time the airline had carried more than 1 million passengers in a single month, a spokesman for the airline said Monday.

The previous monthly record was 998,424 passengers set in August 1996, according to Cathay Pacific's General Manager of Network Revenue Ian Shiu.

The total number of passengers the airline carried in the first four months this year was 3.81 million, up 9.3 percent over the same period in 1999, and the passenger load factor was 75.7 percent, compared with 68.4 percent for the same period last year, Shiu said.

He added that the airline's cargo operation also continued to perform well with 63,242 tons carried in April, bringing the year- to-date total to 234,861 tons, up 12.4 percent over 1999.

"The new record reaffirms the strength of the regional economic recovery and our success in attracting more business across our global network," Shiu said, adding that the airline is moving ahead with its plans to mount additional capacity to meet growing demand, increasing its fleet from 65 to 77 wide-body aircraft by September 2001.
