ABM Treaty Must Be Maintained, FM Spokeswoman

China supports Russia's position to maintain the integrity and validity of the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) treaty, said Zhang Qiyue, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman.

She made the remarks here today at a regular press conference in response to a relevant question.

Zhang noted that the adherence to the ABM treaty is conducive to the maintenance of international strategic balance and stability, and conforms to the common interests of all countries.

She said that plans to set up missile defense systems and to revise or withdraw the ABM treaty will not only affect the process and shake the basis of nuclear disarmament, but also bring about a new arms race, including an arms race in the outer space.

Such plans will do no good to any country in the world, Zhang stressed.
