Ecological Environment Project Starts in Qaidam Basin

A project aimed at comprehensively improving the ecological environment of Qaidam Basin started on June 5, which includes fighting desertification over an area of ten thousand mu and growing 50 thousand mu of land to grass.

Qaidam Basin, located in Qinghai Province, is one of the three biggest inland basins in China, with rich resources of salt lake, petroleum, and natural gas. Due to a high elevation and dry climate, plants in this region are rare and desertification ravages at a speed of over one million mu a year. Deterioration of ecological environment has posed serious threat to human survival in this part of the land.

People have mapped out plans to beat back desertification in the area. in the recent five years. Haixi Prefecture has stepped up its efforts to afforest the land. More than ten towns and agricultural zones have been established and the afforested area have already reached as many as 2.05 million mu.

According to plan, in the ten years to come in the future, 770 thousand mu will be afforested and 5700 thousand mu of land will be grown to grass to increase the area's forest coverage and create a good ecological environment for development.
