Jiang Expresses Condolences over Quake Victims in Indonesia

President Jiang Zemin sent a message of condolence to his Indonesian counterpart, Abdurrahman Wahid, on Monday, offering sympathy for victims of a strong earthquake on Sumatra island.

Jiang said he learned with shock that the earthquake has caused deaths and property losses.

"On behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, I would like to express profound sympathy to you and through you for the victims of the earthquake," Jiang said.

The powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale on Sunday night in Bengkulu province, Indonesia, has killed 103 people and injured more than 500 others.
