China Builds National Science Think Tank

The Chinese Academy of Sciences ( CAS), home to top scientists in China, is going all out to make itself a national science think tank.

"The CAS is working hard to make itself the top academic assessment body and the most influential consultation organ for decision-making in China, and will realize the goal of becoming the country's science think tank," president of CAS Lu Yongxiang said at the tenth conference of CAS academicians, which began in Beijing on Monday.

Lu said that CAS will continue to provide strategic consultations for the central government on some key issues, such as developing the western region, enhancing military force through science and technology, and helping state-owned enterprises sharpen their competitive edges through technological renovation.

"History has repeatedly demonstrated that scientific and technological groups are needed to join the consultation and decision of lots of strategic and foresighted issues concerning the country's development," Lu stressed.

CAS has presented many group reports on hot issues since the program of building a national science think tank was initiated two years ago.

The academicians' opinions on the western region development, sustainable development of agriculture, and prevention of sand storms have been taken into serious consideration by the nation's high-ranking officials, Lu said.

Established in 1949, CAS is comprised of 625-member academic committees and some 120 institutes throughout the country. It has become China's reigning sci-tech consultative body and research center.
