China to Offer Daily Air Quality Reports

Starting Sunday, China will release a daily report on the air quality in 41 major Chinese cities, according to the China Environmental Monitoring Center.

Zhu Jianping, an expert with the center which will produce the report, said Sunday the cities include 32 provincial and autonomous regional capitals and nine major coastal cities.

Six other major coastal cities will be added to the report after the necessary monitoring equipment is installed, the sources said.

The center currently produces a weekly report on the quality of the air in 47 major cities on the Chinese mainland.

The daily service is expected to help improve people's awareness about air pollution and other environmental issues, and involve them in efforts to clean up the environment, Zhu said.

About a dozen leading cities, including Beijing and Tianjin, already issue daily air quality announcements.
