Mubarak, German FM Discuss Middle East Peace ProcessEgyptian President Hosni Mubarak met with German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer on Sunday to discuss the latest developments of the Middle East peace process and economic cooperation between the two countries."We discussed the state of different arenas in the peace process, notably on the Palestinian and the Syrian tracks, along with regional and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation," Fischer told reporters after the meeting. He said that Germany is keen on making contributions, along with its partners, to the progress of the Arab-Israeli peace talks in a bid to realize peace and stability in the Middle East and the neighboring Mediterranean region. The Palestinians and Israel have made little progress in their negotiations for a final peace agreement on thorny issues which they plan to sign in September. Syria and Israel have yet to resume talks on the return of the Golan Heights that the Jewish state occupied from Syria in the 1967 Mideast War. Fischer said that he and Mubarak also discussed the growth of investments and trade between Germany and Egypt, adding that these topics would be at the center of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's state visit to Cairo in October. Germany is the second largest exporter to Egypt and is the seventh largest importer of Egyptian goods. Fischer arrived in Cairo for a two-day visit on Saturday, when he held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa on regional issues, bilateral ties and the cooperation between Egypt and the European Union, which are on the way to signing a partnership agreement aimed at forging closer cooperation in the political, economic and trade fields. After Egypt, Fischer will travel to Israel and the Palestinian self-rule areas.
