Yugoslavia Upset by Hong Kong in Soccer FriendlySouth China from Hong Kong SAR scored an upset here on Saturday by stunning powerhouse Yugoslavia's national team 4-2 in a soccer friendly. The local hosts unleashed a string of pressure on the visitors' defense, especially in the first half, and made sound use of their attempts. Four minutes into the game, forward Zeljko Gavrilovic of Yugoslavia opened the account for the Hong Kong club by rubbing a pass from Lee Kim Wo, and added one more 21 minutes later by rushing into the box after catching a long pass. As the hosts kept attacking, Lee Kim Wo delivered a delicate pass to captain Cheng Siu Chung, who left-footed the ball into the net for a comfortable 3-0 margin. To prevent its first line-ups from injury for the up-coming European Championship a week later, Yugoslavia substituted seven players and striker Mateja Kezman broke his team's deadlock by heading home in the 66th minute. Yet, the hosts were in high spirit and defender Lee Wai Tik slammed home outside the box three minutes later, dampening any winning hope for the visitors. Although it netted again through a free kick in the 90th minute, Yugoslavia still suffered its first defeat in its Asian tour after a 2-0 over China one week ago, and two goalless ties against South Korea. |
