China Dominate Hong Kong FINA Diving GP
Diving powerhouse China showed their superiority in world diving when they captured two more golds at the Hong Kong Diving Meet in Hong Kong Friday.
Tian Liang from China, world cup winner in Sydney in January, stayed in form to beat his rivals, winning men's 10-meter platform with 783.93 points.
The score is believed the highest in the diving history. And among his dives, Tian was awarded full marks of 108.00 points by seven referees when he finished his eighth dive -- 207B. It is also the highest points that a diver has ever got up till now.
Leon Taylor of Britain was second, 108.45 points behind Tian, and the third place went to Australian Robert Newbery who got 662. 43 points.
Tian's teammate Huang Qiang made two mistakes, finished fourth in 656.58 points.
The competition of the women's three-meter springboard turned out to be a Chinese contest between world cup winner Guo Jingjing and Olympic gold winner Fu Mingxia.
The 19-year-old Guo had to do her best to beat the 23-year-old Fu with an advantage of regulate dives. Guo won the event with 639. 18 points, 5.46 points more than Fu scored.
Australian Chantelle Michell won the bronze medal in 556.80 points.
"My performance today is just so so," said Guo, adding that she would concentrate on training for Sydney Olympics and would not compete in international tournaments before that.
The three-day meet, one of the 14-leg FINA Diving Grand Prix series, will close on Sunday.
