Chinese Students Upbeat about Politics, FutureChinese university students are optimistic and supportive of the policies of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the government, according to results of a national survey by the Ministry of Education. The survey was conducted among tens of thousands of students at 75 universities in eight provinces and municipalities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Hubei, Guangdong, Shaanxi, Jiangsu and Jiangxi. Results showed that the major issues that the students watch closely are US bombing of the Chinese Embassy in the former Yugoslavia, the Invasion of the former Yugoslavia by US-led NATO, the "two countries theory" by Lee Teng-Hui of Taiwan, the signing of Sino-US agreement on China's accession to WTO, the celebration ceremony of the 50th anniversary of the founding of New China and the return of Macao to the motherland. The students gave positive comments on the government's work to rejuvenate the nation through developing science and education, crackdown on smuggling, curb deflation and appropriately handle Sino-US relations. More students than in previous years are positive about the government's efforts to reform and develop state-owned enterprises, rule the country by law and build up an advanced culture. Results of the survey show that the students think the central government's decision to combat the "Falungong" cult is absolutely necessary. Efforts to contain the evil sect have been successful. Students highly praise the economic growth of the country and are optimistic about future economic growth. Students are eager to join the CPC, obtain master degrees, win professional qualification and participate in social work and part time jobs.
