Leaders of Non-Communist Parties Inspect Xinjiang

A group of leaders of non-communist parties and persons of no political affiliation toured northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to inspect the development of western China from May 18 to June 2.

The group was led by Vice Chairmen of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Congress (CPPCC) Wang Zhaoguo, Jing Shuping and Zhou Tienong.

Wang Zhaoguo, also head of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said Saturday that accelerating development in Xinjiang has great significance for maintaining political and social stability in the autonomous region, enhance solidarity of various ethnic groups, safeguarding security of frontier areas and strengthening frontier defense.

Noting that Xinjiang has 47 ethnic groups, he said that safeguarding unification of the motherland and opposing separatism among ethnic groups are the long-term political tasks of Xinjiang.

The group also inspected infrastructure construction, economic restructuring, protection of the environment and the development of science and technology in western China.
