Chongqing Supports Scientific Development

Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has invested a huge sum of money in support of scientific research and industrialization of research achievements.

The city has allocated 1 million yuan (120,481 U.S. dollars) annually since 1997 to subsidize academicians in their work. Last year alone, the city granted a total of 1.52 million yuan (183,132 U.S. dollars) for seven scholars to conduct research projects. Furthermore, the city has earmarked 60 million yuan (7.2 million U.S. dollars) in the past four years for young and returned scientists to do scientific and technological research. The fund has helped more than 40 scientific developments go into production.

The city will invest 200 million yuan (24 million U.S. dollars) before 2002 to help higher learning institutions establish scientific and technological zones and high-tech incubation bases.
