Droughts will not Affect China's Grain Supply
The severe droughts that hit north China this year will result in a reduction of agricultural output, but will not affect the country's grain supply, Qiu Xiaohua, deputy director of the National Bureau of Statistics said Friday.
He told a press conference that China has enough grain stocks which can satisfy the country's consumer demand for at least a year and half.
"Maybe, the price of some varieties of grain will go up in a certain period of time, but we are more concerned with grain price fall than price rise," he said.
He said that it is a good thing if the grain price rebounds, which will help raise the farmers' income and boost the country's economic development.
"In fact, all Chinese farmers are expecting the grain price to rebound," he said.
Since 1996, China has witnessed consecutive agricultural harvests, which has led to an oversupply of agricultural products and a continuous fall in their prices.
