Switzerland Desires Speedy Conclusion of WTO Talks With China

Swiss trade negotiators have expressed hopes to strike a deal with China in Geneva this month on China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), Swiss Radio International reported Thursday.

"We expect to wrap up rather quickly because the working party has to continue its work on the protocol of accession," Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen, head of the Swiss Economics Ministry's WTO division, was quoted as saying.

"We have special interests in watches," Ineichen said. "And that's an area where we'd like to get more tariff concessions. And we have a few financial services issues we'd like to solve with the Chinese."

Switzerland is one of the five WTO members yet to sign a bilateral agreement with China. The other four are Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico.
