Liaoning Develop Land Along Expressways

Development of land resources along an expressway in Panshan County in northeast China's Liaoning Province has proved successful, and the province is to extend the practice to other areas.

In Panshan, local people develop aquatic breeding by using the pits left over during the construction of the road, which in turn gives rise to other growing businesses and processing of farm products.

With initial success in Panshan county, the province has decided to launch a similar project along one of its major expressways, allocating 18,000 sq km of land for modern farming.

So far, Panshan has built 88 experimental ponds, planted 200, 000 trees, and developed 66.7 hectares of aquatic breeding area along the expressway running through the county. The undertakings generate 1.65 million yuan in revenue annually.

Further off the road, an experimental high-yield farming belt has been demarcated, and a rice breeding center and a large wholesale market of aquatic products have also been established.
