Western China to Develop More Ground Water ResourcesChinese geologists will work to determine a group of perspective water resource areas in western China, in an effort to meet the needs of major construction projects and development of urban areas there.An official with the Ministry of Land and Resources saidin Beijing Thursday his ministry's water resource exploration will focus on ground water resources in big cities, industrial and agricultural development zones in western China. He said hydro-geological surveys will be launched in over 20 cities and areas in shortage of water supply. They include Xi'an City of Shaanxi Province, Lanzhou City of Gansu Province, Urumqi City of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Tarim Basin agricultural and petro-chemical development zones and Qaidam Basin development Zones. The Official said another important task of his ministry in water resource development of the western region is to help utilize the unique large-sized natural ground reservoirs in inland basin areas in northwest China. He said his ministry will develop ground water resources on a moderate scale and monitor the use of ground water in several river valley areas in western China. Experts believe that water shortage is the most serious obstacle to economic and social development in western China. |
