"Spring Bud" Program Helps 900,000 Female Dropouts

The "Spring Bud" Program, a national endeavor that helps female school dropouts in poor areas, has helped over 900,000 girl students continue with their studies since it was launched in 1989.

An official with the China Children and Teenagers Fund (CCTF), initiator of the program, said the program has collected over 300 million yuan (about 36 million U.S.dollars) in the past decade.

Gu Xiulian, vice-president of the All-China Women's Federation and CCTF vice president, said at a ceremony Tuesday to commend those who had played an outstanding role in the program and excellent students helped by the program, that "Spring Bud" had developed into a national program with the goal of having all girl drop-outs return to school and complete their nine years of compulsory education.
