China to Improve Protection of Consumer Rights

China will strive to establish a perfect system for protecting consumers' rights in the 21st century, which is based on legislative protection, and guaranteed by administrative, judicial and social protection, said Gan Guoping, deputy director of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

Gan made the remark at a symposium on the protection of consumer rights held recently in Beijing. In the new century, with the rapid development of science and economy, and the coming of economic globalization and the information age, the country's consumption realm will sustain major impact, bringing about profound changes in people's idea, style, and structure of consumption and posing a new question regarding the protection of consumer rights, he said.

Second, it is necessary to strengthen market supervision and management, and to vigorously intensify the administrative system for the protection of consumers' rights and interests. It is essential to establish a perfect consumer complaining and reporting service network with telephone No. 12315 to provide timely solutions to consumption-related disputes and seriously investigate and deal with cases of infringement on consumers' rights and interests; focused on crackdown on the illegal activities of manufacturing and selling fake and shoddy commodities, it is necessary to continue efforts in this regard in key areas and trades and concerning major commodities Third, it is imperative to mobilize various social forces and give full play to the role of the social system for protecting consumers' rights and interests, it is necessary to accelerate the establishment of a social protective system featuring consumers' organization of self-aid, trade association, enterprise self-discipline, news media and public supervision.
