Local Plans Must Include Children

On the eve of International Children's Day, a senior cabinet official urged governments at all levels to include children's issues in their regional work plans.

Governments at all levels must create a more favourable climate in which children can grow up, said Wu Yi, State councillor and director of the Working Committee for Women and Children under the State Council, at a conference yesterday in Beijing.

Wu called on schools, families and the public to build a healthier environment for children, allowing them to excel in studies, health and morals.

The conference was held to discuss the country's development for children and mark Children's Day.

China has made remarkable progress in the development for children over the past few years, according to sources from the Ministry of Education.

The country has 180,000 kindergartens with 23 million pre-schoolers, according to statistics from the ministry.

By the end of last year, China registered 580,000 primary schools attended by 99 per cent of children nationwide. Middle schools reached more than 60,000, attended by 89 per cent of children nationwide, statistics revealed.
