Foreign Trade in Chongqing Increasing

Both the imports and exports of Chongqing, the largest metropolis in southwestern China, registered large increases in the first four months this year, according to a foreign trade report released on May 31.

The city's imports increased by 70 percent to reach US$270 million in the first four months, while exports doubled the figure of last year's same period to reach US$240 million.

Imports were characterized by general trade, with imports of motor vehicles and motorcycles from Japan accounting for 70 percent of the total volume.

State-owned enterprises were the principle exporters, and it is worth noting that the exports of private enterprises have increased from two to 10 percent so far this year, with most of their products going to Japan, Vietnam, the United States, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, and Hong Kong.
