One Russian Serviceman Killed, 14 Injured in Blast

One Russian serviceman was killed and 14 other injured in an explosion early Wednesday in Volgograd, about 900 kilometers southwest of Moscow.

Four of the injured are listed in grave condition, the Interfax news agency reported, quoting the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's press service.

An earlier report said that three Russian servicemen were killed and eight wounded in the explosion.

The blast happened at 7.05 a.m. local time (0305 GMT) on the city's Marshal Zhukov Avenue. A military garrison is located near the scene of the blast.

The explosive device, reportedly tied to a tree, was set off at the moment when a military unit was passing nearby in formation. The independent NTV television reported that the explosion was caused by a remote-controlled landmine stuffed with metal balls.
