China Focus on Correction of Juvenile Delinquency

Statistics from the Supreme People's Court indicate that people's court inflicts severe punishment on 60 percent of criminals who infringed the rights and interests of minors, but for minors involved in criminal cases, 97 percent received light punishment or probation. And recidivism rate among minors only amounts to 0.3 percent of total juvenile delinquency.

Shen Deyong, a vice-president of the Supreme People's Court, said at a news briefing held today that since the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of the Minors" came into effect in 1992, judicial organizations nationwide have done plenty of work in the protection of juniors' physical and mental health and their legal rights.

From 1992 to this April, people's court have concluded the trial of 180 cases of imparting criminal methods, 6,400 cases of kidnapping women and children, 40,000 cases of abducting and selling women and children, and 600 cases of traffic in abducted and sold women and children.

During the period, a number of 145,000 criminals were sentenced, with a severe punishment rate exceeding 60 percent.

A juvenile judgement system with Chinese characteristic has been established, which further strengthened the correction of juvenile delinquency, he added.
