Taiwan Leader Should Face Reality

The new leader of the Taiwan authorities should face the reality that there is only one China and Taiwan is an integral part of China, said a commentary in the latest issue of Outlook Magazine, the country's most authoritative news weekly.

In his inauguration speech, the leader promised that he would not declare independence, nor push forth the inclusion of the so-called "state-to-state" description in the constitution, nor promote a referendum to change the status quo in regards to the question of independence or reunification.

However, the speech included an absurd precondition that puts things upside down to the promises and avoided the most crucial issue that there is only one China, and Taiwan is an integral part of China, the commentary said.

The speech should have provided a chance for the Taiwan authorities to revert to the stance of the one China principle. It seems, however, that they have plans of their own.

Despite the so-called goodwill of the speech, the Taiwan authorities have actually adopted a wait-and-see attitude, waiting for the right moment to declare the independence of Taiwan, the commentary noted.

The idea of Taiwan independence will not be tolerated by the Chinese people or the international community, and it will become increasingly difficult to accept as time goes on, the commentary added.

The commentary called on the Taiwan leader to face the reality of one China rather than closing his eyes to the fact.
