World's Tallest Towers Open to Public

Hundreds of shoppers, schoolchildren and tourists rode express elevators up the world's tallest skyscrapers: Malaysia's gleaming Petronas Twin Towers, which opened to the public Tuesday. Many began queuing up for special passes two hours before officials from Petronas, the national oil corporation, started ushering the visitors to the bridge that links the1,483-foot landmarks nearly halfway up, on the 41st floor. The buildings were opened last year, but only employees of the companies renting space in the 88-story skyscrapers had access. The towers, which were completed in 1996, surpass Chicago's Sears Tower, which since 1973 had been the world's tallest building at 1,450 feet.
