Museum to Showcase Red Army Slogans

The city of Liuyang in central China's Hunan Province is planning the construction of a museum to house a collection of slogans used by the Chinese Red Army in the 1920s and 1930s.

Liuyang, situated in northeastern Hunan, was the main site of the Autumn Harvest Uprising, an armed uprising led by Comrade Mao Zedong in 1927 along the Hunan-Jiangxi border. The uprising marked the Party's independence as a revolutionary army.

The slogans, written on walls of several century-old houses, feature subjects ranging from the building of the Red Army and land policies, to the management of household registration. They serve as evidence that the Communist Party of China led the broad masses of the Chinese people in their long struggles.

The number of these slogans has decreased from 1,600 in the mid 1980s to a present 300 due to the collapse of the old houses and a lack of protection, said a local cultural official.

To better protect these historical artifacts, experts suggest that all the remaining slogans be cut from the old houses and be kept together in museum. Detailed background information will also be prepared to go along with each piece.

A group of specialists from the state cultural protection departments based in Beijing will be sent to this south Chinese city to offer technical advice for the cutting of the slogans.
