Cardoso Reiterates "One China" Policy

Brazil sticks to its "one China" policy and the basic principle of developing a strategic partnership with China, said Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso on Tuesday.

Cardoso made the remarks when receiving the credentials of new Chinese ambassador to Brazil Wan Yongxiang. Wan conveyed the regards of Chinese President Jiang Zemin to Cardoso.

Brazil and China enjoy a close political relationship and frequent high-level exchanges, Cardoso said.

The successful launch of the Sino-Brazilian Terrestrial Resources Satellite last year indicates the great achievements of bilateral cooperation on science and technology, he noted.

Brazil is willing to further increase its smooth cooperation on science and technology with China, said the President.

Cardoso reiterated that Brazil supports China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), and hopes to further enhance bilateral economic and trade exchanges.

Brazil and China hold the common goal in developing world economy and trade and maintaining world peace, Cardoso said.

China attaches importance to the bilateral exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy and trade, science and other fields, said Wan.

China is willing to enrich and deepen the connotation of the Sino-Brazilian strategic partnership in a bid to build a stable and long-term bilateral relationship of mutual benefit and defend the interests of the developing countries together with Brazil, the ambassador indicated.
