Ethiopia Withdraws Troops From Western EritreaEthiopia announced Tuesday morning that it had withdrawn troops from western Eritrea "after completely shattering Eritrean positions at the western front and overrunning their highly-fortified trenches".In its press release, the Office of Government Spokesperson said that "after successfully achieving their mission", the Ethiopian troops that had been controlling western Eritrea since May 12 have now withdrawn. "The Ethiopian defense forces were engaged in western Eritrea as part of their larger military strategy to liberate all Ethiopian territories under Eritrean occupation," the office said. During the military operation, the office said, many Eritrean troops were killed, wounded or captured while large caches of Eritrean weapons, ammunition and other military supplies were captured or destroyed. The Ethiopian troops' withdrawal from the Eritrean territory occurred hours before the proximity talks between the two belligerent countries begins on Tuesday. The indirect talks, sponsored by the Organization of African Unity, is designed to help put an end to the two-year-old Ethio-Eritrean border conflict.
