Information Industry Grows Fast in China

China's information industry grew fast in the first quarter of 2000, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The output of program-controlled switchboards surged 33.2 percent year-on-year to 10.23 million lines in the Jan-March period.

Production of optical communications equipment increased by 22. 3 percent to 5,342 units, and that of carrier communications equipment up 16.3 percent to 2,167 units.

In the three months, output of computers registered a surge of 55.8 percent to the total of 564 units while that of micro- computers soared 73.1 percent to 1.45 million.

At the same time, China produced 1.25 billion semiconductor integrated circuits, rocketing 59.5 percent on an annual basis. And production of mobile communications equipment fell a year- on-year 40.6 percent to 1.12 million sets.
