China's Passenger Traffic Rises, Freight Falls

China's passenger traffic grew in the first quarter of 2000 while its freight traffic continue to see a decline, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

Total passenger traffic in the Jan-Mar period reached 3.6 billion, 3.67 percent more than the same 1999 period.

The highway sector accounted for the bulk of the traffic, with passengers amounting to 3.27 billion during the period, up 3.5 percent year on year. The railway sector received 260 million passengers, up 6.32 percent, and 15 million passengers have traveled by air during the period, up 7.89 percent.

The waterway sector reported a decline in traffic, with passengers reaching 50 million, dipping 0.20 percent year on year. Meanwhile, total freight traffic in the period reached 2.94 billion tons, down 1.46 percent.

The highway sector handled 2.27 billion tons of cargo, down 1. 70 percent year-on-year; The railway sector, 394 million tons, up 3.67 percent; the civil aviation sector, 432,300 tons, surging 17. 51 percent; and the waterway sector, 270 million tons, down 6.30 percent.
