China to Expand Coal Gas ProductionChina is planning to step up coal gas development and Sino-overseas cooperation in this sector over the next five years with the aim of producing 10 billion cubic meters of coal gas by the year 2005.According to Huang Yicheng, chairman of the executive council of the China Energy Research Society (CERS), the country is very rich in coal gas resources, with between 30 trillion and 35 trillion cubic meters within a depth of 2,000 under ground, an amount ranking third in the world. The senior expert said that China plans to establish four or five coal gas production and utilization bases between 2001 and 2005, and verify recoverable coal gas reserves of between 400 billion and 450 billion cubic meters during the same period. A comprehensive industrial system of coal gas production and utilization will basically take shape by the year 2005, he added. He noted that the country's coal gas and natural gas resources are mutually complementary in regional distribution, with the former mainly in the central and eastern parts of China, which are short of natural gas resources. Northern China is particularly rich in coal gas resources, which account for 62 percent of the country's total, the expert said.
