Premier Asks Respect for UN Charter

Premier Zhu Rongji said Monday in Beijing that only when all countries adhere to the United Nations Charter can the UN play its due role in international affairs.

Zhu spoke while meeting with Theo-Ben Gurirab, president of 54th UN General Assembly and Namibian Foreign Minister, at Zhongnanhai, the central government compound.

Zhu stressed that the principles and guidelines of the UN Charter and Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existing contribute to establish a new international political and economic order.

The UN now faces major challenges.

"All countries should observe the Charter's guidelines and principles to maintain the UN's authority," Zhu said.

He added that China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is committed to continuing its support for the work of the UN.

Gurirab agreed with Zhu's remarks. Gurirab said the the UN's importance is "irreplaceable."

He also commended China's contribution to international affairs and the UN's work and expressed appreciation for China's stance on major international issues.
